Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment: Fixing What Others Miss
We dive into the world of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) with Dr. Mehra, Osteopathic Medical Director of Evolutionary Healthcare. Recorded live at the Florida Healthcare Conference, this demonstration reveals how OMT effectively treats chronic back pain in ways other specialties often miss.
• Dr. Mehra explains why OMT qualifies as a specialty requiring significant time to master
• Live demonstration of sacrum alignment on a patient with 13 years of post-childbirth back pain
• Muscle energy technique used to correct significant sacral misalignment in just 30 seconds
• Discussion of how OMT addresses problems overlooked by physical therapists, chiropractors, and other doctors
• Exploration of the connection between bone alignment and muscle function

This episode of let's Get Comfy was brought to you by Evolutionary Healthcare. Caring is what we do. Alright, welcome to another episode of let's Get Comfy podcast. And, yes, we have the couches to the side. Here we're live at the Florida Healthcare Conference. Here at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, I have a wonderful volunteer we're going to display today and demonstrate osteopathic manipulative treatment how it's effective and how it's important in impacting the post-acute setting, but also the world. Right, it's been around for many years. We have our wonderful doctor that's going to give a better definition than I'm going to provide with us today, and I'll let him introduce himself, as we do traditionally on this show Dr Mira.
Speaker 2:Hey y'all, I'm Dr Mira. I am the Osteopathic Medical Director of Evolutionary Healthcare and we provide OMT Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy Services to post-acute settings and nursing homes.
Speaker 1:Yes, sir. Why is OMT a specialty Dr?
Speaker 2:OMT is a specialty, norman. Great question. It is tough to learn. So every DO learns OMT in their first two years of medical school. Okay, but it takes, it's a short time to learn. Two years is a long time, but it also takes a long time to master.
Speaker 1:I always say Dr Mira is the magic man with the magic hand right here yeah, spear fingers would come. I forget what movie that was, but uh, so we have a demonstration here. I don't know if you want to shout out baby, no, and I might have to turn my head a little bit because dr mirror gonna work on a lower back. Uh, so I might. I know this is going to be an adjustment period for me too.
Speaker 2:But Dr Merritt.
Speaker 1:I'll let you do your thing, man.
Speaker 2:Okay, show us a demonstration.
Speaker 1:My man.
Speaker 2:All right. Well, your wife has had low back pain ever since she had kids, so that's about 13 years, and what I'm going to do is assess some of her lower back, her pelvis, her sacrum, and see if we can fix what's crooked and hopefully she will feel a lot better. So the first thing I'm gonna do is check the alignment of her sacrum. So I'm gonna go down here to your lower back. Is that all right? Okay, and we are gonna go all the way down to the end of that bone and see if it's straight, which it is not. It is very crooked. It's about this much off. So one of the techniques we're going to use is muscle energy to straighten that out. And you can imagine, if that bone is crooked, all the muscles and bones attached to that bone will also not function properly.
Speaker 2:So we are going to use your help, dear, and I want you to take a deep breath in, hold it in and push this leg away from me. Perfect, one, two, three and relax and exhale. And we're gonna do that two more times Deep breath in, hold it and push. One, two, three and relax. Very good, and a third time deep breath in, hold it and push One, two, three and relax. Take a deep breath in, hold it and push this leg out towards me. Perfect One, two, three and relax. Excellent. And now we always like to make sure we fix what we intend to, so I'm going to recheck that and make and see if my thumbs are now even, which they are. So, right away, we've got a very significant correction that more than likely would not have been achieved in any other way, because generally, physical therapists don't look at this, other doctors wouldn't look at this, chiropractors wouldn't look at this, and yet in 30 seconds, we've achieved a very significant change. What do you think about that?
Speaker 1:Well, I have been working on it, doing it for a few years, to try to make sure it's aligned, and adjust myself, you know I've been working on it with her, you know.
Speaker 2:That's great. So one of the other things that we want to make sure it's not just about the bones, it's about the muscles attached to them.
